Mark Troy founded Compass Property Management in 2007. He started the company on a card table in his basement, with only 25 units in his portfolio. Compass has grown to nearly 1000 units in only 8 years. Mark has 13 years of experience in investment property, having been a landlord himself. Mark has a deep understanding of the Grand Rapids’ real estate market and what it takes to be a successful investor. After years of clients asking him to sell and buy real estate, he took the plunge and started Compass Realty Services and now serves as the owner/broker. Mark helps clients diverse their portfolios by selling properties that do not perform and purchasing ones that bring in more profit. Mark has served on the Rental Property Owner Association board since 2012. Currently he is serving as its Vice-President. In 2014, he was a founding board member for the West Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Residential Property Management. He is also a current member of the Housing Board of Appeals for the City of Wyoming. On a more personal level, Mark was an Infantry Officer for the United States Army. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Western Michigan University and worked at Steelcase for over 10 years in their engineering and sourcing department. Mark enjoys spending time with his wife, Christy, and his 7 year old son, David. He is an avid fisherman, hunter and also enjoys shooting for sport. He is very active in his church and community and helps others with financial counseling.
John Brophy has been a member of the Compass family since 2008, purchasing in as co-owner in 2009. Born and raised in New Jersey, John graduated from The College of New Jersey with a BS in Engineering and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Engineering Management at NJIT. John dipped his toes into the property management waters early when he chose a nontraditional route of moving out of the nest by purchasing a small 4-family property. As a live-in landlord, John quickly learned the ropes of what it takes to balance the financial needs of a property investment with the day-to-day needs of the residents living under it’s roof. In 2007, John married his beautiful wife who was a Michigander living in NJ for grad school. Shortly thereafter his family moved from the busy East Coast to Grand Rapids to be closer to family. John and Thea have two beautiful, young sons, Rhys and Harry. As John’s’ family grew, so did Compass. John was the driving factor in bringing maintenance in house, and then starting Compass Remodeling. John’s efforts did not go unnoticed. His tracking and efficiency skills helped grow Compass in all aspects. Most recently, Compass was honored in Remodeling Magazine as joining the distinguished group of remodeling and home improvement contracting firms in the Big50 Class of 2015. Brophy’s family is active in their church and community. John is also passionate about providing funding and services to Alternative Pathways, a non-profit that assists adults of varying abilities. In his spare time, John enjoys taking advantage of the many things that Michigan has to offer over his beloved home state of New Jersey, such as trees, fresh air, and nice people. He does however miss things such as hills, mountains, and scrapple. .
